  2. Why use questionnaires? • To collect information about a given population in a structured way • So that results can be analysed • Aims • To obtain accurate and relevant information

  3. Types of question • Open • Allows exploration of themes • Allows you to gain additional information on a specific question • Closed • Easy and quick to fill in • Minimise discrimination against illiterate • Easy to record the results • Easy to report on the results

  4. Tips when designing questions • Use short sentences – Avoid complicating questions • Only ask 1 piece of information at a time • Avoid negatives • ‘Small group teaching should be abolished’ • ‘Small group teaching should continue’

  5. Tips when designing questions • Be precise when asking questions • How often do you borrow books from the library? • How many books have you borrowed from the library in the last 6 months? • Avoid sensitive issues • Politics • Finance • Peoples age!!
