Ranchers • WHO: • Spanish and Mexican settlers-vaqueros • Veterans of the Confederate Army • African Americans • Native Americans • WHAT: • Went on cattle drives to cow-towns & railroads • The Long Drive-herding cattle over 1,000 miles to reach railroads for shipping • Dangers/hardships • storms • stampedes • rustlers (cattle thieves)

  3. Ranchers • When? • Cattle worth increased dramatically in 1866 • 1860’s-1880’s • mid 1880’s -“Cattle Kingdom” ended (too many cattle caused prices to fall) • Where? • Kansas • Texas • Wyoming • Why? • High profits • Railroads made the shipping of cattle easier

Farmers • Who? • Immigrants • Women-single & widowed • Families- women played key role • African Americans called exodusters • What? • Plains farmers known as sodbusters (houses were made of sod) • Used dry farming- planting seeds deep in the ground to reach water • Dangers/hardships: • floods & droughts • brush fire • plagues of insects • deep snow

Farmers • When? • 1860’s-1870’s • April 22, 1889- The “Oklahoma Land Rush” (homesteaders rushed out to claim land in Oklahoma) • Where? • Great Plains • Why? • Railroads made journey to the west easier • Free land- Homestead Act gave 160 free acres of land to settlers • Safety for former slaves
