Key Idea #1 Authentic leaders know who they are and who they want to be. They also know that while the journey between those two points is never complete, they constantly strive to get there.
Stories of Self A story of self includes a challenge, a choice, and an outcome, and it gives insights into why the storyteller was called to leadership. By listening carefully, we can learn more about the storyteller’s values, strengths, and motivations, as well as the storyteller’s quirks, stressors, and development needs.
My Story of Self What was the challenge in my story? What decision did I face and what were the outcomes of the choices I made? What did my story reveal about my values, strengths, and motivations? What did my story reveal about my quirks, stressors, or development needs?
Key Idea #2 Who you are influences the decisions you make and how those decisions are perceived by others. By analyzing the impact of your decisions, you can learn more about yourself and become more like the leader you want to be.

Johari Windows Authentic leaders aren’t just aware of their experiences, values, strengths, and weaknesses, but they also work to share this information with others. However, this isn’t a one-way street. Authentic leaders know they can learn even more about themselves by listening to others’ perspectives. The Johari Window is a tool for thinking about what we know about ourselves and what others know about us.
