  2. anecdote(noun) Definition:a short account of an incident in someone’s life. Synonyms: tale, story, sketch, vignette, yarn I love it when my grandfather tells me anecdotes of when he was a boy growing up in the countryside of France. The one about him getting lost overnight in the Alps is my favorite.

  3. counterfeit(noun, adjective, verb) Definitions: noun: an imitation designed to deceive; adjective: fake; not genuine verb: to make an illegal copy Synonyms: (adj.) false, phony, bogus Antonyms:(adj.) genuine, real, authentic It’s difficult to make counterfeit American money; one needs elaborate, difficult-to-procure items in order to make the counterfeits.

  4. docile(adjective) Definition: easily taught, led, or managed Synonyms: manageable, compliant Antonyms:wayward, disobedient, unruly The little boy I’m babysitting is unusually docile, eager to learn and please me.

  5. fallible(adjective) Definition: capable of being wrong, mistaken, or inaccurate Synonyms: imperfect, errant Antonyms:foolproof, unfailing, flawless During our Science Fair project we need to avoid using fallible methods in order to have accurate results.

  6. fickle(adjective) Definition: liable to change one’s mood, ideas, or point of view rapidly Synonyms: capricious, faithless, inconstant Antonyms:steady, invariable First, my best friend wanted to go running, then she immediately changed her mind and wanted to stay home and read. I’m tired of her being so fickle!

  7. fugitive(noun, adjective) Definitions: noun: one who flees or runs away, especially from the law adjective: lasting a very short time; wandering, difficult to grasp Synonyms: (noun) runaway, deserter; (adjective) elusive Antonyms: permanent, lasting, enduring The murderer escaped prison and remained a fugitive for over five years until he was caught and put away again.

  8. grimy(adjective) Definition: filthy, covered with dirt or soot Synonyms: soiled, filthy Antonyms: spotless, clean, immaculate After playing in mud puddles, we were grimy from head to toe. It took over an hour to scrub the grime from our bodies!

  9. iota(noun) Definition: a very small amount Synonyms: speck, dab, bit Antonyms: flood, deluge Although I didn’t have an iota of proof to the contrary, I didn’t believe his story because he has lied to me in the past.

  10. maul(verb, noun) Definition: verb: to mangle, rough-up noun: a large, heavy hammer Synonyms: manhandle, batter Two hikers were badly mauled when they surprised a mother grizzly bear. Fortunately, they survived with just a few deep gashes.

  11. radiant(adjective) Definition: shining, bright; giving forth light or energy Synonyms: glowing, brilliant, dazzling, resplendent Antonyms: dull, tarnished, lackluster My mom’s radiant smile lights up a room and makes everyone feel good.

  12. rural(adjective) Definition: relating to farm areas and life in the country Synonyms: rustic, countrified Antonyms: urban, metropolitan, citified Because Hampshire Regional is located out in the country, it’s considered to be rural school district.

  13. substantial(adjective) Definition: anything major, significant; actual or real Synonyms: considerable, huge, tangible Antonyms: minor, insignificant Our fundraiser resulted in raising a substantial amount of money— enough to pay for our new baseball uniforms.

  14. tactful(adjective) Definition: skilled in handling difficult situations or people Synonyms: discreet, diplomatic, skillful Antonyms: rude, boorish, indiscreet My teacher was able to tactfully let me know that spinach was caught in my teeth. I was able to go to the lav and remove it before anyone else noticed it. Phew!

  15. tamper(verb) Definition: to interfere with; to handle in an improper way Synonyms: fool with, monkey with, mess with I should not have tampered with my jammed locker as it’s now worse than ever. I need a janitor!

  16. uncertainty(noun) Definition: doubt; state of being unsure Synonyms: hesitation, doubtfulness Antonyms: confidence, certainty Our hiking group had a good deal of uncertainty as to whether we could safely cross the raging river.
