  3. inexorable • Unrelenting; unavoidable • Her husband could not adjust to the celebrity’s inexorable rise to power.

  4. contentious • Causing controversy or argument • Their dinnertime conversation turned contentious when the topic of his former girlfriend came up.

  5. terse • brief and to the point • If I need an answer to my question, I prefer that it be terse than long-winded and loquacious.

  6. acclimate • To adjust or become accustomed to a new environment • The deer have been having trouble acclimating to the suburban sprawl.

  10. ostensible • Professed or pretended; not necessarily true • She was ostensibly wealthy, or at least everyone presumed so from the way she dressed.

  11. disparity • Inequality or difference • There was a great disparity in the size of the two dogs.
