  2. Authoritarian – ADJ, Noun • Subordinating the individual to the state; completely dominating another’s will • Children sometimes rebel against parents who are authoritarian.

  3. Autonomous - ADJ • Self-governing • After the fall of the Soviet Union, many of its former republics became autonomous nation-states.

  4. Avarice – Noun • Greediness for wealth • It was not avarice that motivated Joe to work hard to become wealthy so much as a desire for financial security.

  5. Aversion – Noun • Firm dislike • I have an aversion to spicy food because it upsets my stomach.

  6. Beguile – Verb • Charm; deceive by trickery • Eve was beguiled by the snake to take the fruit fromthe tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

  7. Belie – Verb • Contradict; give a false impression • His kind words were belied by his angry tone and expression.

  8. Benevolent - ADJ • Generous; charitable • Children in America imagine Santa Claus as a benevolent old man who dispenses gifts on Christmas.

  9. Benign - ADJ • Showing gentleness; exerting a beneficial influence; harmless • The king’s benign rule has made him popular with his subjects.

  10. Bolster – Verb • Support; reinforce • A good teacher knows when to criticize her students and when to bolster their confidences with praise.

  11. Bombastic - ADJ • Using inflated language • Today, bombastic speeches are criticized for their pomposity, but in the past many people enjoyed them as entertainment.

  12. Braggart – Noun • Boaster • Mandy’s mother turned in to a bit of a braggart after her daughter made the all-state soccer team.

  13. Cajole – Verb • Coax • Most children are pretty good at cajoling their parents into buying them toys.
