In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), there have been no new wild poliovirus cases reported in the past week, maintaining the total count at 92 for 2011. The latest case of paralysis onset occurred on November 28 in Maniema province. However, two new confirmed cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) have emerged from Katanga province, raising the total for the year to four. UNICEF is set to conduct an anthropological study to address resistance and operational issues, while the CDC plans to deploy nine new STOP professionals to priority areas for improved response and surveillance.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) • No new cases were reported in the past week, leaving the total number of cases for 2011 at 92 (all WPV1). The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 28 November in Maniema province. • However, two new cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV type 2) have been confirmed from Katanga province, bringing the total for 2011 to four. • UNICEF is planning an anthropological study to deepen understanding relating to resistance and operational issues in Katanga. • A technical review to ascertain reasons for missed children is planned by partners and the Government for 9 February. • Surveillance reviews are currently being planned for priority areas. • CDC is deploying nine new STOP professionals to priority areas in the country. • Source: http://www.polioeradication.org/Dataandmonitoring/Poliothisweek.aspx
