  2. Function of the Circulatory System • Transports wastes, nutrients, and other materials throughout the body

  3. What makes up the Circulatory System? • Heart • Blood Vessels • Blood

  4. The Heart An organ that pushes blood throughout the circulatory system. • Made up of two pumps: • Pump to the lungs to pick up oxygen & drop of carbon dioxide • Pump to the rest of the body to drop off oxygen & pick up carbon dioxide.

  6. Blood Vessels • Arteries: vessels that take blood away from the heart. • Strong walls • Veins: vessels that carry blood back to the heart. • Thinner • Capillaries: connects arteries with veins.

  7. The Blood • Plasma • Red Blood Cells • White Blood Cells • Platelets

  8. Plasma Liquid portion of the blood that contains proteins, glucose, hormones, gases and other substances.

  9. Red Blood Cells • Carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

  10. White Blood Cells • Fight infection by attacking disease-causing organisms.

  11. Platelets • Large cell fragments that help form blood clots.
