  3. Want to be a TA? • Must have a 3.0 GPA • Must get at least an A- in PAF 101 • Must keep MWF 11:40am-1:40pm free in your schedule • You will receive 3.0 credits • Newhouse majors should consult their advisors BEFORE applying

  7. Dale Carnegie Presentations • TA's present how they used DC to fix a problem they faced. • One group will be called on to say what DC principle the TA used.

Dale Carnegie Principles • Don't criticize, condemn or complain. • Give honest and sincere appreciation. • Arouse the other person an eager want. • Become genuinely interested in other people. • Remember that a man's name is to him the sweetest and most important sound in any language. • Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves. • Talk in the terms of the other man’s interest. • Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely. • Avoid arguments. • Never tell someone they are wrong • If you're wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically. • Begin in a friendly way. • Start with questions the other person will answer yes to. • Let the other person do the talking. • Let the other person feel the idea is his/hers. • Try honestly to see things from the other person's point of view. • Sympathize with the other person. • Appeal to noble motives. • Dramatize your ideas. • Throw down a challenge. • Begin with praise and honest appreciation. • Call attention to other people's mistakes indirectly. • Talk about your own mistakes first. • Ask questions instead of giving direct orders. • Let the other person save face. • Praise every improvement. • Give them a fine reputation to live up to • Encourage them by making their faults seem easy to correct. • Make the other person happy about doing what you suggest.

  11. Common Trend Line Graph Mistakes • Don’t forget to label the title and both axes • DON’T include gridlines • DON’T include a legend • DO include a source • Put numbers on data points • Start at zero on Y-axis • If using an Education policy, Use academic years (ex .2008-2009, 2009-2010)

  13. SU Uses YOUR Money • 75% of income comes from undergraduate tuition • About 50% is used to support undergraduate education • Ph.D. programs are highly subsidized as is academic research • How can the academic services be improved?

Undergraduates for Better Education (UBE) • Mission: UBE works to improve undergraduate education at Syracuse University by empowering students to be better consumers of their education, and creating more open communication between students, faculty and administration. We strive to inform administrators of student issues that are easily overlooked on a campus as large as ours. • 2013 Study: Survey to determine students’ levels of satisfaction with advising, course availability, and instruction. Findings are written up in a report and will be presented to administration.
