Survey purpose - To take in the situation of the performing arts in Korea- To provide fundamental data for government policy-making • Survey population • Sampling method - Stratified simple random sampling • Survey method - interview and questionnaire by FAX, EMAIL and mails • Survey period - administrative organs : Oct. 17~Nov. 2, 2007 - theatres and companies : Oct. 29~Dec. 7, 2007 • Survey organization - administrative organs : Korea Arts Management Service - performing arts centers and performing arts companies : NI Korea Inc.

  5. 1. Theatre (Performing Space) • Scale of Halls - large-scale halls(over 1,000 seats) : 10.5% - medium and small-scale halls (under 1,000 seats) : 89.5% • Type of establishment body - 305 public theatres (47.9%) - 332 private theatres (52.1%)

  6. 2. Artistic Company • Number of artistic companies - total 2,385 companies • Location - 1,283 companies (53.8%) located in the Metropolitan area (Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon) • Type of organization - 247 public companies(10.4%) - 2,138 private companies (89.6%)

  7. 2. Artistic Company • Genre of artistic companies - 792 western musiccompanies (33.2%) - 202 multidisciplinary arts companies (8.5%)

  8. 3. Performing Arts Festival • Survey Target - 248 local governments • Number of performing arts festivals - total 88 festivals(Theater, Dance, Music, etc.) • Region - 32 festivals (36.4%) in the Metropolitan area (Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon) • Government subsidies - 62 festivals (70.5%)

  9. 3. Performing Arts Festival • Genre of festivals - on the basis of 62 festivals supported by governments - 24 theater festivals (38.7%) - 20 music festivals(32.3%) - 6 dance festivals(9.7%) - 12 Multi-genre festivals (19.3%)

  10. 4. Performance • Productions(or Presentation) - on the basis of 847 halls(in 637 theatres) - total 42,055 productions presented in 2006 • Productions by genre

  12. 5. Performing arts market • Income and expenses - Total income of theatres and companies in 2006 : approximately USD 1.4 billion - Total expenses of theatres and companies : approximately USD 1.5 billion

  13. 5. Performing art market • Size of performing arts market based on Earnings - about 730 million dollars (USD) - 1.3 % of cultural industry income

  14. 6. Government Budget • budget of the central and local governments - performing arts budget in 2006: about 174 million dollars (USD)

  15. 7. Human Resources • Managing staff in theatres and artistic companies - total 15,868 managing staff working for theatres and artistic companies • Artistic staff in artistic companies - 76,226 staff (average 32 staff per company) in 2,385 artistic companies
