Online Master of Science in Counseling Psychology Program: Real Time Case Study By CBU Online & Professional Studies The California Baptist University Online and Professional Studies (abbreviated CBU Online), is an Internet-based higher education facility, offering Masters and Doctorate degrees to young students and professionals seeking to expand their career options alike. The company was founded amidst a boom in the online college industry, and has since set itself apart from the competition as a Christian-focused, education-based institution. Yet aside from its credentials, the school sets itself apart with a faculty composed often of continuing professionals, embracing both their personal practices and teaching responsibilities. While growing as an online-based school, CBU and its faculty have adopted countless state-of-the- art tools to better facilitate the education of their students. “Our online and hybrid programs are tailored to meet your needs and give you the 24/7 flexibility expected for 21st century learning,” the school states on its webpage, expanding on it with: “the latest technologies in distance education through faculty and staff who are committed to student’s academic, professional, and spiritual success.”One of the newer courses the school has adopted is the Counseling Psychology program, taught by several teachers within the institution’s Behavioral Science faculty, including assistant professor Kristen White.
White, just like other members of the faculty, operates her own practice alongside teaching. As per her, the combination is a boon rather than a bane. “Most of our Behavioral Science faculty, including me, actually still operate our private practice in addition to teaching. So I’m still doing my field while working as faculty. I think that just makes it very live –I can be in a class and talking about a case that I saw two weeks ago if it’s applicable,” she notes, insisting that an active professor can be more relevant to the real-world professional’s needs after college. CBU often prides itself on crafting professionals – a quality it looks for in its faculty as well. However, given the existing bias among some employers and students regarding online schooling, many are apprehensive to jump into the program and get their Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology (MSCP) degree. Others, fear that they cannot complete the program and its requirements. White offers words of wisdom to these students: “I would tell students to maybe sit down and write a letter to yourself about why you want to complete this program and what you hope to accomplish with it and where you hope to go with it,” she writes. “And then put that someplace so whenever it gets hard you can go back and read it and remind yourself, ‘Yes, this is why I’m doing this, this is what I’m passionate
about.” Given the dedication and self-discipline required to undergo a distance learning program, no matter whether completely online or as a hybrid, motivation is a key factor. CBU’s method of allowing teachers to remain competitive in their industries while training new members for the workforce is a real-time case study, with results that many await with bated breath.
