  5. Chancellor’s Safety Message • As employees, we all have a role in creating and maintaining a safe environment • Participate in safety training • Empower employees to report near misses • Safety is a shared responsibility • Prevent workplace injuries and illnesses

  6. What is SOS & why do we need it? • UCI program that meets Cal/OSHA’s Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) Standard • Integrates Safety into our Workplace • Injury Minimization • Workers’ Compensation Cost Reduction • Creation of a Safety Culture

  7. Work Units • Lowest level work group of individuals that have similar training needs   • Includes people who work closely together on a regular basis • Examples: • PI and laboratory staff • Office manager and staff • Trades supervisor and staff

  8. SOS Representative (SR) • Appointed by a Supervisor or PI • Coached by EH&S to implement SOS into their work unit • Qualifications • Familiar with the work units daily activities • Ability to communicate safety procedures to work unit members • Ability to maintain culture of safety in the work unit

SOSRepresentative Responsibilities • Complete Hazard Identification Checklist • Ensure work unit members have taken the Safety Training Self-Assessment and completed EH&S required training in UC Learning Center • Complete work unit specific training • Communicate completion of steps and safety related activities to EH&S

  10. Hazard Identification Checklist • SR surveys work area and identify hazards • Correct hazards • Document date corrected

  11. Hazard Identification Checklist • Complete checklist every year • Complete earlier if: • Significant change to environment • Significant change to operation • New hazards • Maintain SOS Records Indefinitely

EH&S Required Training • UC Learning Center (www.uclc.uci.edu) • SR ensures work unit members log into UCLC and complete the Safety Training Self-Assessment and EH&S required training • Questions evaluate job categories/activities • Responses determine required training • Supervisors/PI’s have access to transcripts

Work Unit Specific Training • Beyond the standard EH&S course offerings • Address hazards and processes found only in your work unit • Review Hazard Identification Checklist • Review SOP’s • Review other work unit specific activities • Discuss specific work unit hazards at meetings • Document work unit specific training

  14. Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) • Includes safe procedures and steps for hazardous work processes • Examples: • Emergency exit procedures • Using a highly hazardous chemical • Performing an operation around high voltage equipment

  15. Lookout for Changes • SR ensures when new hazards arise and when employees change jobduties they: • Retake self-assessment in UCLC • Enroll in additional required EH&S classes • Update Hazard Identification Checklist • Receive work unit specific training

Rewards • SOS Representative identified and has taken SOS Representative training SR receives $5 EH&S Safety Dollars • SOS Representative has completed the Hazard Identification Checklist and corrected the hazards under the work unit’s control SR receives $10 EH&S Safety Dollars • Work unit members have taken Safety Training Self-Assessment and completed EH&S required training All work unit members receive $5 Starbucks gift cards • All work unit members have reviewed work unit specific activities SR receives$15 EH&S Safety Dollars All work unit members receive choice of SOS items

  18. Ongoing Rewards • SOS Representative annually completes Hazard Identification Checklist SR receives$10 EH&S Safety Dollars • Work unit members participate in Rewarding Safe Acts program $5 Starbucks card for employees who are nominated.
