  1. Terminology from the first class period • Goal: What it is you are trying to accomplish; the bottom line. • Milestone: An intermediate accomplishment. It is specific, concrete, verifiable, and important to the project. • Tasks: The things you do to get the job done.

  2. The goal is the large thing you wish to accomplish • The goal of this project is to fabricate and test a device that will detect collisions with SDV buoys and transmit collision event information to a central receiver. Sometimes there are sub-goals or secondary goals The transmitter will also be able to determine the severity of the collision to estimate whether any damage was sustained to the buoy.

  3. Milestones act as deliverables on the way to the goals These should be quantifiable or demonstrable • Research? • Testing? • Demonstrations? Choose microcontroller based on research. Demonstrate that circuit configuration fulfills X functions. Demonstrate interaction between transmitter and computer. Demonstrate that computer program serves X functions. Validate communication between satellite and program. Show that X fulfills X functions. Why?

  4. Tasks are the actual work that must be done to complete those milestones • Collect journal articles regarding detection methods • Find microcontroller that has X and Y qualities • Draft literature review • Plan circuit layout • Create testable circuit board • Write detection program

  5. Work accomplished and work remaining describe the tasks that have and have not been completed • Use the milestones in your progress description Milestones Progress Description Also called “Progress Summary,” “Status,” “Tasks Completed” and “Tasks Remaining.” Clearly state which milestones have been completed, perhaps including the dates when they were finished.
