Main Idea • Think about what the story is mostly about. • Read the title it will give you an idea. • Look closely at the first and last sentences of the story. • Look for words that are repeated a lot.
Authors Purpose • Think of Authors P.I.E. • Did the author write to: • P-persuade you? • I-inform you? • E-entertain you? • What is the theme in the story? (Lesson you learned)
Cause & effect • CAUSE- Why something happened • EFFECT-What happened • EXAMPLE: BILLY DID NOT STUDY, THEREFORE, HE EARNED AN F ON THE TEST. • Cause: Billy did not study • Effect: He earned an “F” on the test.
Sequence of events • Think of what happened first, next, then, last. • Underline signal words: first, next, then, last, BEFORE, AFTER.
Context clues Use context clues to find the meaning of the word. (plug in the word) EX. THE LION IS MEAN AND FEROCIOUS. • What does ferocious mean? A. nice B. scary C. ugly D. harsh ***ANSWER IS B (Plug it in)
Text features • Make sure to look at the heading (title) • Read sub titles (little headings) • Look at illustrations • Read captions (Words under the pictures) • GO back and find answers!!!!!!!!
