  1. Relay Racing

  2. Track & Field Unit • 75 meter • 200 meter • 30 meter relay race • Shot put • Long jump • High jump

  3. A relay race consists of… • members of a team take turns either running, swimming, skiing, biking, skating.. On the track, there are 2 main relays: the 4x100 meter relay and the 4x400 meter relay Traditionally the 4x400 meter relay is the last event in a track meet and is often one of the most exciting races to watch

  4. Tomorrow… • We will be doing a 4x120 meter relay race • This will be done on blacktop and grass in a straight line • You will be in teams of 4 and you will take turns with different starting positions

  5. Rules • Runners must hand off baton to the next runner in a running zone area. On a track it is usually marked by triangles. On the black top, it will be marked by colored cones Typically you hand off the baton with a “blind handoff” which means the runner receiving the baton starts running when he/she sees the other runner hit a visual mark on the track. The second runner then opens his/her hands behind while looking forward. The first runner should then hand off the baton in their hands. Usually the runner will say something as well such as “Stick!” You and your group will decide on any word to yell to the runner when handing off baton. (Word must be appropriate obvi)

  6. Dropping the baton can lead to disqualification.. • or a loss of time • OLYMPIC HEARTBREAK : U.S. Men and Women Relay Team Drop the Baton ( Both teams eliminated ) - Bejing Olympics 2008 • “First, men's anchor Tyson Gay, part of the American team that won the relay at last year's world championships, did not get the red metal stick from third-leg runner Darvis Patton. • Then, about 25 minutes later, women's anchor Lauryn Williams flubbed her exchange with Torri Edwards, their baton dropping to the ground, too. • first absence in the finals since 1948.

  7. Video Clip of 4x400 Final Competitions 2008 Bejing Olympics - Jamaica • http://videolicca.com/videos/_KIlkrVZb-g/beijing-2008--jamaıca-4x100m-fınal-full-competıtıon

  8. Strategy • Usually when setting up a 4 person Start with second fastest, then third fastest, then slowest then fastest Hand-off: the baton always moves Right Hand, Left Hand, Right Hand, Left Hand The baton stays in the same hand it was received in; no switching

  9. After demonstration.. • You will get in to groups of 4 • You will decide on a team name and “stick” word • You will meet as a team on the black top at numbers standing in single file lines facing me • We will practice passing in line while pretending to run. However you will actually be standing in same spot • Then you will practice passing and jogging
