Home Networks • Development driven by: • Generalisation of Broadband Access • 450m home connected by 2010 (FTTH, ADSL, ADSL2+, VDSL) • Data / TV / Telephony • Multiplication of connected devices • HDMI interfaces on HD Flat screens/Camcorders/DVD players and recorders • Bluetooth / WiFi / USB interfaces on phone handsets, gateways, TV sets etc… • GbE interfaces on Home Servers ( > 300 Gbyte storage) and gateways • WiMAX, Viiv, HANA (IEEE1394) etc…

Home Network: key requirements • Data rate evolution from 100 Mb/s in 2009 to 1Gb/s in 2015 (What will we need in 2025? 10Gb/s?) • Network infrastructure lifetime? • Complete house coverage • Lounge, bedrooms, home office • Kitchen, utility rooms… • Simplicity • Wireless interfaces that can connect to the main network (no new cables?) • Plug and play devices • DIY installation / Pre-installation
