  1. Global Warming RenataKarapanceva

  2. Global Warming global warming an increase in the earth's average atmospheric temperature that causes corresponding changes in climate and that may result from the greenhouse effect.

  3. How Does It Happen?

  4. Causes Driving, FlyingSUVs, Trucks, Minivans Power PlantsBurning tons of coal 8 7 5 6 3 2 1 4 Eating Meat & Exotic FoodsAverage food item travels 1000 miles Deforestation Paper products Owning a House! How many trees did they cut? Chemical FertilizersCroplands The ElectricitySo great but so bad Consuming Large Amounts of Water

  5. Emission Percentages per Country for 2008 Statistics provided by the United Nations Statistics Division

  6. We can see that results change when emissions are counted by nation or per capita

  7. Effects of Global Warming Current effects Future effects if not prevented • Ice is melting worldwide • decline of the Adélie penguins on Antarctica • Sea level rise became faster over the last century • Some butterflies, foxes, and alpine plants have moved farther north or to higher, cooler areas. • Precipitation has increased across the globe • Spruce bark beetles have boomed and chewed up 4 million acres of spruce trees • Sea levels are expected to rise between 7 and 23 inches • Hurricanes and other storms are to become stronger • Species that depend on one another will be out of sync • Floods and droughts will become more common • Less fresh water will be available • Diseases will rapidly spread • Ecosystems will change

  8. Maldives The sinking paradise • A paradise of 1 192 islands • Located in the Indian Ocean • People inhabit 192 islands • Dravidian people that derive from what is now known as India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal • Vulnerable to climate change • 2.4 meters above sea level • sea levels to rise 37 centimeters Maldives Islands - Global Warming

  9. Whose carbon dioxide is that? • Should states be held accountable for their contribution to global warming? Is Mohamed Nasheed right to seek help and awareness from states? • Mohamed Nasheed • The Island President

  10. How do we fix the problem? • Based on Joanna Burch Brown’s chapter on compensation and climate change, can you see the Adaptation and Compensation Fund benefiting and improving the situation of the Maldives? • How do we influence and create global prevention in both action and attitude towards global warming?

  11. The Wildlife, The Animals The innocent species • On Thin Ice: Polar Bears and Global Warming • Much Thinner Ice: The Great Melt • Penguins are Dissapearing

  12. Investigating Environmental Inequities Climate Change and Environment Injustice in a Bi-National Context - Grineski et al. • The article argues that socially marginalized cities and communities suffer greater environmental injustices. • According to Grineski et al social factors such as class, family structure, age, access to health care, population density, and school density determine the vulnerability of a group of people in regards to natural disasters.

  13. How Women in Bangladesh promote women’s rights as well as environmental sustainability • Women in Bangladesh fight climate change | Global Ideas

  14. The use of global warming disasters to enforce capitalist ideas Naomi Klein – The Shock Doctrine The theory • After a natural disaster, the shock people experience forces them to forget about their past and only worry about their present circumstances and survival. This is often the time that the population is most vulnerable and governments use this opportunity to impose their beliefs and policies. Shock Doctrine applies to Katrina and Sri Lanka The Shock Doctrine Documentary

  15. Activity: Sustainability What are some ways that we can become more sustainable and raise awareness for global warming?

  16. The Active Participant of Environmental Justice Activity You can paint your pot whichever way you like in reference to social justice. You may want to draw a polar bear or a penguin. You can paint the Maldive Islands. You can create a poster like picture that raises awareness on issues. You can create a green pot with messages like “save the polar bear”, “save the planet”. Etc. It is up to you, be creative! If you are not sure how to plant the Herb please refer to the back of the packaging there is detailed information on how to plant the seeds as well as how to maintain them in the future. During this activity get together with some of your classmates and discuss the benefits or disadvantages of growing your own fruits, herbs, vegetables, etc. in relation to global warming. Be prepared to share this with the class.
