Meet the future. • What is Accelerated Reader? • Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program that lets teachers create a customized reading program to meet the needs of every student. • Primary purpose is to improve reading skills by customizing reading practice for each student. It provides practice for reading transfer. • K-12 reading software program that integrates technology into the curriculum and can help differentiate instruction for students. • Using information generated by the software, teachers can help students select books that are difficult enough to keep them challenged, but not too difficult to cause frustration. • Originally purchased by Advantage Learning Systems and School Renaissance Institute. Meet the future. • How does Accelerated Reader work? • The student starts by reading an AR book at his or her reading level that they have chosen. (The reading level is determined by a STAR assessment.) • Then the student takes a quiz on the book by accessing the Accelerated Reader website. • The program scores the test and lets the student know if it was a passing grade. • If the student passes, they will choose another book and start the process again. • The student accumulates points based on the length of the book and the percentage correct on the AR quiz. • . Meet the future. • What is STAR assessment? • STAR is the Standardized Test for Achievement of Reading. • Computer adaptive, norm-reference test. • Students choose best word to complete a sentence, then next question is delivered. • Generates a grade-equivalent score that can be used to give a current approximation of a student’s ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development). • Teachers then use data to drive instruction by accessing assessment results to determine reading ability and determine course of improvement.
