  1. Ethnicity

  2. Britain has a very ethnically diverse population. Around 87% of the population can broadly be described as white. A variety of other ethnic groups make up the remaining 13%

  3. This diversity is not represented in all aspects of our culture. One area which does not reflect the diverse nature of our society is the world of work. People from ethnic minority backgrounds are under represented in better paid and powerful jobs. For example: In 2005 there were 631 white politicians elected and 15 non-white This is less than 3%

  4. One area where people from minority ethnic backgrounds are over represented is at the bottom end of the income scale. The income poverty rate varies substantially between ethnic groups: Bangladeshis (65%), Pakistanis (55%) and black Africans (45%) have the highest rates of poverty. Black Caribbean's (30%), Indians (25%), white Other (25%) and white British (20%) have the lowest ratesof poverty 70% of those in income poverty in inner London are from minority ethnic groups, as are 50% in outer London.

  5. Integration of people from a variety of background is also an issue. People tend to group together with others from their own ethnic background This lack of integration can cause problems in society In Oldham, the scene of riots in 2001, more than 90% of pupils at one school were Asian, all of Pakistani heritage – and at another school nearby, more than 90% were white.

  6. There are many stereotypes that we have about people from different ethnic backgrounds. Overall, they are generally negative and harmful ones. The key ones that we should concentrate on are the lack of power and lack of income and lack of integration.

  7. Working in groups: First, sum up the different representations you have seen in the clips other groups have made Then, use technical codes to explain meaning For example: (gender) At the start of this clip, The Master appears powerful and in charge. There are lots of use of low angle camera shots when looking at The Master. This gives the impression that he is imposing and commanding. It puts the audience and other characters in a position of weakness and makes them seem and feel insignificant. This changes as the clip goes on. The camera angle starts to become neutral and then it becomes a high angle when The Master loses control and loses his power. His loss of power is reinforced by the use of high angle shots which make him seem vulnerable and helpless.
