  1. International Partnering Meeting for FP7 projects - 30th January 2007 - Winterthur, CH Clara BERTOLINI CESTARI Politecnico di Torino Facoltà di Architettura Department of Architectural Planning andDesign • Professor in: - Construction of Architecture - Technology of Architecture - Processes and Methodologies of Building Maintenance - in PhD Course “Tecnological Innovation for Built Environment” Viale Mattioli, 39 I-10125 Torino tel: +39 011 564 65 07 fax: +39 011 564 65 99 e-mail: clara.bertolini@polito.it • www.culture2000-wood.org

  2. International Research Projects and Cooperations • Project-leader of Culture 2000 multiannual project: “Wooden Handwork/Wooden carpentry: European Restoration Sites”, 2001-2004 (9 partner countries: Italy, Finland, Greece, France, Sweden, Norway, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg; 24 O.U.: research centres, universities, mational boards of antiquities, SMEs, municipalities) www.culture2000-wood.org • Coordinator of multi-annual European Projects (Raphael, Leonardo EBR, Socrates, Erasmus) • RILEM TC “In-situ assessment of timber structures” • National Cooridinator of the Postgraduate Master Course “Urban Wood”, 2007. http://urbanwood.tuwien.ac.at/ • In the proposed Consortium group of Politecnico di Torino, there is the European Secretary of ESIS (European Structural Integrity Society)www.esisweb.org

  3. National Research Projects in Italy • PRIN (National Research Project of National Interest): “Use of nanotechnologies in cultural heritage for the efficiency of maintenance systems in wooden built heritage: innovative technologies for restoration”, 2005-2007. http://www.ricercaitaliana.it/ prin/dettaglio_prin_en-2005084402.htm • Regional project for the industrial research and pre-competitive development: “Nanotechnologies / nanosciences: from wood improvement to timber elements reinforcement, with interventions monitoring”, 2006-2009 • in the framework of “Progetto Finalizzato CNR” for the Safeguard of Cultural Heritage • with UNI National Institutions of Recommendations

  4. First choice FP7 topic: Nanotechnology, Materials, Production Technologies, Call 1- NMP-2007-4.0-6 Innovative added-value construction product-services • or NMP-2007-4.0-1 Advanced wood-based composites and their production Current proposal title: NANOTECHNOLOGIES / NANOSCIENCES: FROM WOOD IMPROVEMENT TO THE REINFORCEMENT OF TIMBER AND THE MONITORING OF INTERVENTIONS • Main objectives and key deliverables: • The present research project starts from the need of improving the efficiency of the processes of restoration, reinforcing, management and maintenance of timber constructions. New processes can be implemented by nanosciences and nanotechnologies, for example: • by creating microchip-based devices able to collect and store information without the need of supervision and to process them in order to obtain a performance index for the single elements and/or the whole structure. • by experimenting new polymeric resins reinforced with nanomaterials (for instance carbon nanotubes) with increased long-term and temperature performances, finalised to the functional recovery of wooden structures • by basing the maintenance actions or post-action monitoring on these approach • by innovating the traditional approach of the SMEs of the sectors

  5. Some tasks of the project: - Work Package 1: Continuous monitoring of the interventions on timber structures and the microclimate parameters; Data exchange between the central data base and single sensors with radio link. -Work Package 2: Consolidation of decayed wood (both solid and gluedlaminated); innovative refurbishment technologies for SMEs -Work Package 3: Wood reinforcement in built heritage and definition of an adhesive product for reinforcement with carbon nanotubes. Consortium proposal: - Politecnico di Torino (IT): Technology of Architecture, Structural Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Materials Science and Chemical Engineering - IVALSA-CNR – Tree and Timber Institute, Florence and Trento (IT) - SMEs in the restoration field - SMEs in the field of diagnosis and monitoring International partnership search: - SMEs in the field of wooden carpentry - Chemical SMEs - Data processing SMEs or expert - Research Centres
