TERREMOTO Y AVALANCHA EN EL MUNICIPIO DE PAEZ, CAUCA Y ZONAS ALEDAÑAS • El 6 de junio de 1994 a las 3:47 p.m. en el Municipio de Páez, Cauca, se vivió un terremoto con epicentro en la parte norte cerca de Dublín, de magnitud 6.4 Escala de Richter y profundidad inferior a 10 Km.; el cual ocasionó derrumbes en sus montañas, que por las características geográficas de la región, creo represas con sus ríos y quebradas, confluyendo todas en el río Páez, dando origen a una avalancha que desapareció pueblos importantes como: Irlanda, Huila, Tóez, Tálaga, parte de Belalcázar; en esta tragedia perecieron más de 1.100 personas. • La avalancha tuvo incidencia en el Municipio de Inzá, Cauca, y en los Municipios de La Plata, Nátaga, Paicol y Tesalia, Huila. • El Terremoto tuvo incidencia en cinco municipio circunvecinos en el Departamento del Cauca. • Los Colombianos fueron ampliamente solidarios con los pueblos afectados y el Gobierno Nacional creo la CORPORACION NASA KIWE (Decreto 1179 de junio de 1994) para atender la emergencia, entidad que trece años después de la tragedia todavía existe.
