Barra Water Sports Club. The Beginning . Started in 1983 Weekend windsurfing & some sailing 2005 - £1000 (CNES) for RYA Sail Days 20 young people took part 2006 - £2000 (CNES and Sports Council) 30 young people took part. 2007 - 2008. 2007 - £5000 (Scottish Community Fund)

2007 - 2008 • 2007 - £5000 (Scottish Community Fund) • For sailing & windsurfing instructors • 60 young people took part • 2008 - £10000 (Awards for All) • For sailing & windsurfing instructors and equipment • 70 young people took part
2009 • Turn around for club when we bought a fleet of second hand sailing boats from RYA • Club Fundraising £5800 • Leader £8635 • Awards for All £5000 • Other £3500 • Total £22,935
This allowed us to buy • 6 Taz sailing boats • 1 rescue rib • 30 buoyancy aids, jackets, trousers, helmets • 4 windsurfing boards • 4 sea kayaks • RYA sailing and windsurfing instructor
We ran • 44 fun sailing sessions • 12 sea kayak sessions • 20 windsurfing sessions
As a result • Sailing - • 96 young people completed their stage 1, 2 & 3 • Windsurfing - • 68 young people completed their level 1 & 2 • Sea Kayaking - • 24 young people completed their stage 1 paddle power certificate
Membership • 110 young people • 15 adults • 9 families
Volunteers & Training • All fun sessions were run by volunteers • 3 windsurfing instructors • 2 assistant sailing instructors • 3 level 2 sailing volunteers • 14 level 2 power boat instructors
Future training • 2 local RYA sailing instructors • 3 local to gain seamanship course • Ongoing first aid
Requirements • Safe launching area • Clubhouse • Storage / parking
Identification of key sites • 10 potential sites within Castlebay • 3 best sites have been identified • Proposals being put forward to the Estate of MacNeil of Barra
