2. A suffix is a syllable added to the end of a word that will change its meaning and form a new word. The suffix ly means “in a certain way”. Quickly- means in a quick way. The doctor quickly ran to the hospital.

3. Sadly means in a sad way. Badly means in a bad way. Fondly means in a fond way. Safely means in a safe way.

4. Here are some more ly words. slowly tamely crisply dimly grandly closely gladly limply safely gravely lately timely

5. briefly eagerly loudly highly rudely softly rapidly highly sharply strictly smartly honestly

6. In words that end in y, the y is changed to an I before adding ly. merry - merrily happy - happily angry - angrily busy - busily lazy - lazily eery - eerily

7. Remember that if a word ends in l you still add the ly. final - finally real - really careful - carefully thankful - thankfully gradual -gradually literal - literally

8. Words that end with consonant + le, you drop the e then add y. terrible - terribly noble - nobly horrible - horribly idle - idly

10. Adverbs Adverbs are words that describe verbs. Adverbs often answer the questions: When? Where? How?

11. She joyfully cheered for them. Joyfully tells how she cheered. Yesterday, I had a picnic. Yesterday tells when I had a picnic. Brad put the boxdownstairs. Downstairs tells where Brad put the box.

12. Adverbs Adverbs also describe adjectives. They usually answer the question How? The sunset was really beautiful. Really tells how beautiful the sunset is. She was too late. Too tells how late she is.

13. Adverbs Adverbs can describe other adverbs, too. Luke spoke extremely quietly. Extremely tells how quietly Luke spoke. Shawn very sadly said good bye. Very tells how sadly Shawn said good bye.

14. Find the adverbs in these sentences. Dylan sat beside Mia at the school play. beside The two friends often went to plays together. often The room was completely dark. completely Suddenly Suddenly, the curtain opened. The scenery was brightly painted. brightly

16. Comparatives Adverbs Adverbs can be used to make comparisons. Some adverbs follow the same rules as adjectives do. Katherine grew taller than Jane. That dog ran fastest of all the dogs.

17. Comparatives Adverbs To make comparisons using adverbs that end in ly, use the words more and most. My aunt read the book more slowly than my uncle. Your sister sang more beautifully than the other singers.
