Significant Figures. Rule #1: All non-zeros are significant example: 673 m = 3 sig. figs. Rule #2: Zeros between non-zeros are significant example: 309 m = 3 sig. figs. Rule #3: Trailing zeros are ONLY significant if part of the decimal example: 0.0034500 m = 5 sig. figs.

  1. Significant Figures Rule #1: All non-zeros are significant example: 673 m = 3 sig. figs. Rule #2: Zeros between non-zeros are significant example: 309 m = 3 sig. figs. Rule #3: Trailing zeros are ONLY significant if part of the decimal example: 0.0034500 m = 5 sig. figs. example: 2.0040 m = 5 sig. figs. example: 42000 m = 2 sig. figs.

  2. Rule #4: When doing math with numbers always round the answer to the number of sig. figs. of the lowest factor. • Example: 32 456 x 945 = 30 670 920 5 3 3 Answer: 30 700 000

  3. Scientific Notation • The Big Rule: • The first number must be between greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10. Basically, there is only one significant figure before a decimal. • Example: 0.0000045 = 4.5 x 10-6 • Example: 569800000000 = 5.698 x 1011
