  1. Welcome to the GEO Water Cycle Capacity Building Workshop It is brought to you by: NASA CONIDA NOAA SENAMHI Canadian Group on Earth Observations UNESCO GEO Regional IGBP Office CONIDA

  2. This workshop: Follows up on earlier IGWCO workshops in South America (Buenos Aires). 2. Fulfils promises made in the GEO workplan. 3. Brings together the interests of NASA, NOAA, GEO and others in capacity building in the water sector for the Americas.

  3. Workshop objectives: • To develop an inventory of the national and regional data needs • and data infrastructure in Latin America and the Caribbean. • 2) To introduce representatives of countries in Latin America and • the Caribbean to the tools that are available for analysis • through GEO and GEO members. • To develop a plan for a program of Capacity Building in the • water sector for the countries of Latin and Caribbean America • and a framework to support “North-South” and “South-South” • support and collaboration.

  13. Outputs: • A workshop report that summarizes the needs and capabilities for • Earth Observations in Latin America and the Caribbean. • At least two new north-south or south-south initiatives through • the interactions between experts at this workshop. • 3) Identification of a core group of experts from Latin America and • the Caribbean with sufficient understanding to access data for • utilization of Earth Observations for water management applications. • 4) A program framework for coordinating GEO-related capacity • building activities in Latin America and the Caribbean.

  14. A few things ...... We will try to keep the primary language for this workshop as English. However we know that some of you may find English very difficult so we do have translators who will translate into English if it is essential. 2. A number of us have come to this workshop with support from our primary sponsors: NOAA, NASA, Canadian Group on Earth Observations, Environment Canada, UNESCO, CONIDA, and IGBP.
