  4. Word Problem Examples Example 2 Suppose a certain item used to sell for seventy-five cents a pound, you see that it's been marked up to eighty-one cents a pound. What is the percent increase? Step 1:find the absolute increase 81 – 75 = 6 Step 2: The price has gone up 6 cents. Now find the percentage increase over the original price. = 0.08 Answer:8% A zoo has 15 emperor penguins, who make up 30% of the total number of penguins at the zoo. How many penguins live at the zoo? Step 1: x=number of penguins at the zoo Step 2: 30% of x=15 Step Example 1
