  3. The Marriage Vow • Vow to God: Honor His will on marriage, Gen 2:24; Matt 19:3-6; Heb 13:4 • Don’t vow rashly, Eccl 5:2; Prov 20:25 • Keep your vow, Eccl 5:4-6 • Accountability to God and integrity before men

  4. The Marriage Vow • Vow to each other: God-approved marriage covenant, Prov 2:17; Mal 2:14 • Vow: “Do you take this woman/man whose hand you now hold to be your lawful and wedded wife/husband?”

  5. The Marriage Vow • Lawful marriages: God-approved, Matt 19:6; Rom 7:2 • God joins together, Matt 19:6 • Given to provide life partner, to populate earth and protect against sin, Gen 2:18; 1:28; 1 Cor 7:2

  6. The Marriage Vow • Unlawful marriages: God-rejected, Rom 7:3; Mk 6:17-18 • Such are not valid before God even though men legally approve of them • Unlawful marriage is adultery, Mk 10:11-12 (Matt 19:9)

  7. The Marriage Vow • Lessons include: • Who you marry will affect your standing with God, so be certain it is lawful according to God’s will before you marry • Take the marriage vows seriously and live by them

  8. The Marriage Vow:Freely Accepted Obligations • Romans 7:2; Ephesians 5:22-33 • Husband: Do you promise to love and cherish her in sickness and in health, and to provide for her in prosperity and adversity?

  16. The Marriage Vow:Freely Accepted Obligations • Faithfulness helps to secure your marriage • Infidelity and deceit assault the purity, openness and trust of marriage • It is hatred of your own flesh (Eph 5:29) • Right to put away and remarry, Matt 19:9

  17. The Marriage Vow:Lasts a Lifetime • Until death …until death you do part? • For life, so choose wisely! • Calls for all the attributes of Christ to be practiced toward each other, Col 3:12-15

  18. Honor Marriage • Do not neglect and abuse marriage • Strengthen by keeping your vows • Be thankful to God for marriage and for your marriage partner, Eccl 9:9
