Character Description Luke Baldwin boy who loves Dan and will do anything to save him Uncle Henry Lukes Uncle who thinks Dan is worthless, and is practical Dan Lukes dog who is old, blind, and has a limb. Mr. Kemp owns the cows and pays Luke Sam Carter tries to drown Dan Aunt Helen Lukes Aunt who defends Uncle Henry

    3. Setting This story takes place in Uncle Henrys sawmill In the summertime

    4. Plot The plot is that Dan is old, and partially blind, Uncle Henry wants to kill him, but Luke loves him, and wants to keep him

    5. Conflict and Resolution Uncle Henry wants to kill Dan so he hires Sam Carter Luke wants Dan to live so when Sam tries do drown him, Luke saves him then Luke takes care of Mr. Kemps cows to pay for the cost of Dan

    6. Literary Element This story is told in third-person omnison. Luke promised himself that when he grew up, he too would be admired for his good, sound judgement. Luke was frightened, for he knew what his uncle was like. All he could think of was that Mr. Kemp had liked them both and it had even been a pleasure to help him get the cows in the evening.
