  2. Who cares? If we have an aging population? What needs and/or pressure will an aging population put on our society (dependency load)? If we have a gradually shrinking birth rate and youth population? What needs and/or pressure will they face?

  3. ACTIVITY: Reading a Population Pyramid and Analysing Needs We will be comparing two different populations. First we will “read” or interpret the pyramids, then we will decide what the needs of each population will be.

  4. Reading a Population PyramidUSE THESE TERMS… • Birth Rate (located at the base of the pyramid ex. Ages 0-4) HIGH or LOW? • Childbearing Age (Ages 20-40) HIGH or LOW compared to youth or non-childbearing ages? • Working-Age (Ages 15-64) HIGH or LOW compared to dependency load? • Retirees (Ages 65 and over) HIGH or LOW compared to working age? • Death Rate (located at the top portion of the pyramid) Gradual-LOW or Spikes-HIGH? • Life Expectancy (average age the population lives to) >80 or <80?

  5. Now what are their needs? Dependency Load - >15 and <65 NOT WORKING? Health Care – Specifically types for children or seniors (i.e. CHEO, Hospices, Retirement Homes)? Shelter Needs – Single-Family Homes/Townhouses, Condos/Apartments, Retirement Homes Education Needs – Daycare, Elementary/High Schools, Post-Secondary, Specified Training Job Opportunities (for youth) –creating jobs that require limited skills, minimum wage salary, summer jobs, employer incentive* Pension Plans – when people <65 retire, they begin to use their pension plan from the government (and their own savings) Consumer Patterns - What do youth spend money on? What do working age/childbearers spend money on? What do retirees spend money on?
