Four Parts of our Math Instruction • Daily Review • Mini-Lesson • Centers & Small Group • Reflection *Similar to Daily 5 Reading
Daily Review • Reinforces previously taught concepts • Depending on grade level 1-10 questions • Can be done as whole group, small group, or individually • Can be completed on board, small whiteboards, student notebooks, or worksheets • Use materials you already have
Mini-Lesson • Whole group lesson • Teach a new concept • Aligned with Common Core • Could be a lesson from a textbook series or an interactive whiteboard lesson
Centers • Previously taught concepts • Provides students time to practice using new skills • Mixed ability groups- students teach each other • Differentiated materials- students select work to match their ability level • Variety of skills
Small Group Instruction • Instruction to ability-leveled groups (We use math DIBELS to group students) • Provides additional time to teach new concepts at the students’ learning level • Time for observational assessment of individual student’s ability level
Reflection • Students write and/or talk about math • Can be done whole group, small group, or individually Common Core Mathematical Practices 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Center Content • One station for computation • One station for word problems • Additional stations will review previous concepts or practice a new skill • Independent centers- students should be successful without support • Use what you already have • Math Centers- Take it to Your Seat • www.teacherspayteachers.com
Center Differentiation • Include different ability levels at each center (We like to color code the paper. Blue is on-level and green is above level.) • Most Take it to Your Seat Centers have 2 different level sets *We try to do this at each center, but sometimes it doesn’t happen. We are a work in progress.
Integrating the Arts • Add motion to concepts • Transformation Dance • Schoolhouse Rock videos are good for money and multiplication • YouTube videos are available for most concepts • Counting by Two's • Time
Websites • Xtramath reinforces computation skills. It allows you to upload your class list, select student level, and monitor their progress. www.xtramath.org • MAP math matches student scores based on NWEA testing. It is broken into math concepts and links students to fun (educational) games. http://www.sowashco.k12.mn.us/ro/pages/studentlinks/map/
