  1. Tracker Summary Alan Bross MICE CM October 10, 2007

  2. Tracker Stations • 12 of 15 complete (includes LED scan) • Last three only require machine carbon-fiber support frame • station bundling connectorising gluing polishing ========================================================= • 5 done done done done • 6 done done done done • 7 done done done done • 8 done done done done • 9 done done done done • 10 done done done done • 11 done done done done • 12 done done done done • 13 done done done done • 14 done done done done • 15 done done done done • 16 done done done done • 17 done done done done • 18 done done - - • 19 done done - -

  3. Cross-section: Source X Tracker Station V W X Active Area • Source moves parallel to plane of station • Choice of Sr90 or Co57 • Limited to straight lines (arbitrary angle & offset) for QA purposes • Absolute position reproducible to 2 μm V Motion Axis 0 W Source Motion Axis 1 Station Light Yield QC • We are still working on LY QC procedure and data analysis. Will QC all stations for Tracker 1 before assembling

  4. Tracker 1 Assembly

  5. Cryo and Readout • Production cryostats 1 and 2 are complete • They have been fully characterized • However, the AFE backplanes still need to be installed • And final AFE electrical/power test (see slide) • Cryostat #3 is nearing completion. Should be ready for first cooldown in about 2 weeks • Cassettes have been released from D0 • Cryostat #4 still needs cassettes. • We have tentative agreement in place with D0 for the additional 2 cassettes needed for Cryostat #4 • George Ginther asked for a document detailing how the cassettes will be operated, environmental conditions, fault analysis and safety precautions, personnel training, etc. • The first draft is complete and has been reviewed by George. Some issues were identified (crane operation in MICE Hall for example) and are being addressed. The document is being updated

  6. Tracker Racks • The Wiener power supplies for the AFE boards have arrived and Bill Luebke and and John Fogelsong have developed a plan for power distribution. The cable runs and lengths for the power and LVDS cables have now been set • Assembly of the final rack(s) has begun • LVDS Cables have been ordered (10m length) • Components for power cabling (cables, fuse assemblies, connectors) have been ordered. • The plan is to fully test the racks (one for two cryostats) at Fermilab to make sure that AFE operation is correct. • Power conversion will then have to occur when the equipment arrives in the UK • This is the critical path and will determine when the system can be shipped to RAL

  7. AFEIIt Power Distribution

  8. AFEIIt Power Distribution Weiner Power Supply (+5.5, +5, ±12, +3.3)V Trunk Line Fuse Panel Cryo 2 Drop Cryo 1 Drop

  9. Schedule for Tracker Services Rack • Goal: • Test Cryo 1 and 2 electrically as full system at Fermilab • All AFEIIts, LVSBs, Low-voltage power and distribution cables • Crate and ship to RAL • Have at RAL by November 5, 2007 (1 week uncertainty at the moment).

  10. Tracker Readout ElectronicsPreparation for Cosmic Ray Test • Finish firmware by Oct. 5 (Still working on VLSB) • Run cryostat/AFE-IIt/VLSB tracker readout tests at FNAL from Oct. 8 – 19. (Set to start) • Ship tracker readout system by Oct. 29 (was Oct. 22) • Unpack tracker readout system at RAL by Nov. 5 (may slip to Nov. 12)

  11. AFE-IIt Boards • 8 boards for 2 cryostats fully tested and characterized. • 4 boards assigned to 3rd cryostat, not yet tested and characterized • 11 spare boards available, 4 of which will be assigned to 4th cryostat. • 23 AFE-IIt boards available for MICE

  12. VLSB Boards • Parts and boards are at FNAL. • Technicians have started stuffing boards. • First 1 or 2 boards may be done in ~ 1 week. • FNAL will test basic functionality of data registers.

  13. Electronics Summary • Preliminary firmware package being set up for data readout tests at FNAL • Some work still remaining • Cryostat characterization and VLSB board assembly ongoing • End in sight for full firmware for MICE (~ 600 triggers/ms)

  14. R8 Cosmic Ray Test • We are on track to start full system test (Tracker, CKOV, TOF, KL, DAQ, L1 Trigger) in second half of November Patch Panel Top plate ~484mm ~2630mm M24 screwed rod
