  1. Data Teams: Using data to drive planning in ECSE classrooms Special School District of St. Louis County Early Childhood Special Education

  2. Getting Started with Data Teams (DT) • SSD-wide initiative • Summer workshop for DT trainers/coaches • DT Trainers then trained ECSE staff by region • Follow-up coaching visits • Started with just 1 target area

  3. TheProcess • Complete Developmental Curriculum Checklist (DCC; ECSE’s progress monitoring tool) • Create master goal banks for DCC & IEP goals • Use DT template to combine lesson planning & data collection • DT meetings every other week  review old data & plan new lesson

  4. Sample page from DCC Summary

  5. Sample IEP Goal Bank

  6. Sample DCC Goal Bank

  7. Sample lesson plan/data template

  8. Sample completed plan/data

  9. Staff Supports • Follow-up visits by DT coaches • Administrator follow-up visits • Open Lab sessions • Website with DT Resources (templates, data forms, etc.)

  10. Data Team Feedback Form

  11. Successes DCC being used for planning rather than just pre/post-test assessment Planning is more systematic & data-driven Better selection of activities (to target specific skills) Teaching is more focused/goal-oriented Planning has been more collaborative

  12. Barriers • Time for planning! • Differentiating for typical students vs. early learners • Data collector skill level / buy-in • Severe behaviors interfering with instruction and data collection

  13. HelpfulHints Get organized from the beginning Be flexible - figure out your system Find and use strengths of team members TRAIN paraprofessionals to assist with data collection so teachers can focus on teaching

  14. HelpfulHints DT meetings should be focused - only discuss the “highlights”; avoid distractions When planning, start with the goal/skill; not the activity. Focus on only 1 goal per activity; not all the skills the activity could target

  15. Changes for 2010-11 • Implement “Holy” planning times • Using the DT process for “critical area” in each classroom; not just literacy • Staff must use process to track a minimum of 2 “overlapping” skills

  16. Changes for 2010-11 • Refining template (variations) • Involving the students in the data collection process
