  1. LIU-ABT Systems Review: PSStatus and Planning for KFA-53 T. Kramer, L. Ducimetiere, L. Sermeus LIU-PS ABT review

  2. Content LIU-PS ABT review Requested Hardware and future Location Conceptual System Considerations Schedule Budget /Spending Profile Manpower/ Resources

  3. What hardware (modification) is needed? LIU-PS ABT review

  4. What hardware (modification) is needed? LIU-PS ABT review • KFA 53 is a complete new kicker system: • Vacuum tank • Delay line magnet • Pulsed/Controls Cables • Generators (PFL) • Controls • Infrastructure (building, cable ducts, electrical installation, etc.)

  5. Received Requirements LIU-PS ABT review As fast as KFA-45 (rise time 46 ns 1-99%). Max. deflection angle at 2 GeV: 1.3 mrad. Beam stay clear aperture: 140x53 mm . Magnet to be placed in SD53.

  6. Available Space (Tunnel) 650 mm available (magnet to be displaced) KFA-45 KFA-53 LIU-PS ABT review

  7. LIU-PS ABT review

  8. Available Space(Surface) Reference: KFA-45 KFA 45: Bat. 365 75+25m² KFA-53: Approx. 50+20?m² LIU-PS ABT review

  9. LIU-PS ABT review KFA45 area is crowded already (although controls consolidation could free up some space) Cables to SD53 would be too long.

  10. Where to put the Pulse Generator? 365 362 356 51m KFA45 KFA53 131 225 LIU-PS ABT review

  11. Space LIU-PS ABT review 365-1-405: No space available. Cables too long (should be <50m). 362:seems to small.(extension?) Cables too long. 365: (east end). Seems ok but TE-EPC owned. 356: possibly best location but TE-EPC owned. If none of the above is possible: New building between 365 and 356.

  12. Concept and Main Parameters LIU-PS ABT review

  13. Basic Concept for Magnet (I) LIU-PS ABT review Delay line magnets. Leave aperture for possible impedance shielding efforts (+6mm=59mm). Adapt magnet to rise time requirements in SC mode. Hence KFA 45 modules will not fit anymore (53mm).

  14. Basic System Concept (II) LIU-PS ABT review Beam rigidity at 2 GeV is 9.29 Tm; Magnetic length is ~650 mm; 1.3 mrad kick requires ~850 A; Usage of RG220 cables desired; Thus max. 40kV ops max. 33kV nominal 27 kV. -> 27kV/0.85kA -> ~30 Ωsystem impedance.

  15. Basic System Concept (III) LIU-PS ABT review 2 delay line magnets to be housed in new vacuum tank. Usage of known 60 Ohm low loss cable ( 2 in parallel). TX cables loaded with ferrites for pulse shaping. Refurbishment of 2 EPA generators. CX 1154 Switches. Hydraulic group (ELENA type)

  16. Main Parameters (TDR) LIU-PS ABT review

  17. Schedule LIU-PS ABT review

  18. LS2 Draft Schedule - LIU-PS activities (as presented in Chamonix by J. Coupard)Consolidation work not included! • installation slot (PS tunnel) currently from August 2018 to mid November 2018 (3.5 month) LIU-PS ABT review

  19. Planned Schedule LIU-PS ABT review

  20. Budget LIU-PS ABT review

  21. Budget breakdown LIU-PS ABT review Total Budget is currently 1.940 MCHF. Detailed breakdown to be done. Costs for building or adaption work of existing building not included so far.

  22. Spending Profile KFA53 Metrics per year in kCHF Metrics per year in kCHF Additional 10kCHF planned for commissioning (2019) in APT wu 113136 LIU-PS ABT review Preliminary estimates for (minimum) building adaption work in red..

  23. Manpower / Resources LIU-PS ABT review

  24. Manpower/Resources LIU-PS ABT review • No detailed manpower planning available yet. • Conceivable that additional manpower is needed. • Integration/design effort to be estimated and requested at design office. • Assembly area for magnet and generator will be 867 (within controlled zone). • HV-Test cage for system testing needed in 2017.

  25. Other: Consolidation of KFA-45 LIU-PS ABT review A refurbishment of the KFA-45 controls is envisaged as very similar KFA-53 controls needs to be developed anyway. The replacement of the KFA-45 SF6 cables is foreseen. Extension of cable shed for spare cable drum to be discussed.

  26. Conclusions LIU-PS ABT review KFA 53 requirements received. Conceptual design for LIU-TDR delivered. Functional Specification to be written until December. Resources estimate and Budget/Manpower planning to be done. Technical Specification to be delivered in mid 2015. Delivery of KFA-53 magnet and generator as foreseen in 2018.

  27. Outlook w.r.t lessons learned during LS1 LIU-PS ABT review KFA53 project goes in parallel with many other consolidation and LIU projects. Injector restart after LS1 showed many unplanned events and subsequently unscheduled interventions (source sometimes outside ABT responsibility!). Also commissioning of renovated systems showed that time for correction of non-conformities was necessary. Staged approach of accelerator ramp up looks excellent in theory but for hardware sections it means that troubleshooting for already running CPS overlaps with PS/SPS commissioning whilst there is still installation work in the LHC ongoing. This has to be covered by the same manpower. With combined efforts it was manageable for LS1 but it will be a totally different challenge to deliver and commission several completely new (and additional) systems beside the usual start up business(and changing staff).

  30. 362 LIU-PS ABT review KFA28 and storage Tx cables >50m More a shed than a building (in case of usage to be completely rebuild?)

  31. 365 • Within TE-EPC responsibility. • Ok for Tx-cable length. • Extension possibility for cable shed. LIU-PS ABT review
