  2. Imperialism Defined • When strong nations dominate weaker countries and territories politically, economically, & or militarily.

  3. Factors That Fueled American Imperialism 1) To increase military strength -Alfred Mahan The Influence of Sea Power upon History 1660-1783 (1890) -Great White Fleet 2) A desire for new markets -A need to increase foreign trade 3) Belief in Cultural Superiority

  4. The United States Acquire Alaska & Hawaii • In 1867, the United States Secretary of State arranges for the purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. • “Seward’s Folly” or “Seward’s Ice Box” turned out to be a bargain at 2 cents an acre. • Land rich in oil, timber, gold, land, & more.

  5. Hawaiian Annexation -Hawaii was an important stopping point for ships traveling to & from China. -Sugar became an important crop for missionary families. -By the mid 1800s American sugar growers account for ¾ of Hawaii’s wealth.

  6. Hawaii Continued -Japanese, Chinese, & Portuguese immigrants worked the plantations. By 1900, foreigners out- numbered natives 3 to 1. -1875-the U.S. agreed to import Hawaiian sugar duty free.

  7. Hawaiian Tragedy -1887-U.S. Naval base @ Pearl Harbor is built. 1890-The McKinley Tariff lifted Hawaii’s duty-free status. -Planters called for annexation. -1890-King Kalakaua is forced to amend Hawaii’s Constitution.

  8. More Tragedy • 1891-King Kalakaua dies • His sister, Liliuokalani tries to change the Constitution. • She is forced out by U.S. Marines and Sanford Dole is made the leader of the new Hawaiian gov. • President Cleveland tried to intervene but it was not successful & he formally recognized the Republic of Hawaii • 1898-U.S. annexes Hawaii.
