  2. Feathers • Only birds have them- if it has feathers, it’s a bird. No matter how weird it looks. Dancing Bird Birds of Paradise

  3. Feathers Why do birds need them? Check it out! • Warmth • To protect the bird’s body • Many birds have waterproof feathers- keeps them safe from the rain - helps them stay warm in the water

  4. Feathers • Help birds to be camouflaged- keep birds safe- help birds to hunt

  5. Feathers • Help birds to fly- lightweight (they don’t weigh the bird down) - catch and direct air in a special way that allows them to fly Condor in Flight Owl In Flight

  6. Beaks What do they do? Check it out! • Helps them to eat • Other animals have jawbones and teeth, which are heavy. Because birds need to weigh as little as possible (so they can fly!) birds have lightweight beaks, instead!

  7. Beaks: Why are there so many kinds? Birds have different beaks because of what they eat!

  8. Wings Why do birds need them? What about birds that don’t fly? • To help them fly • Cooling in hot weather • Warmth in cold weather • Protection • Sheltering of chicks • Balance while running • Cooling in hot weather • Warm in cold weather • Protection • Sheltering of chicks • Helps them to swim

  9. Feet: Why are there so many kinds? Different feet do different things!
