MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of Fort Hancock Elementary Library is to provide materials for all children in hopes they will fulfill their individual abilities; to challenge them to excel in a changing world and to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. The school library strives to instill a love of learning in all students and ensures equitable access to information.

  3. STATISTICS New copies added to library= 300 books Students holding library card=189 students Parents holding library card= 95 Total items lost by patrons= 55 Total students=140

  5. LIBRARY COLLECTION The entire collection was re-evaluated and materials were weeded out based on outdated titles, old materials to make room for newly acquired books. The last time the library was weeded was in 2000. A total of ------ was withdrawn while 300 new titles were added

  6. STAFF AND HOURS • 2 Certified Media Specialist • 1 Library Aide Library Hours Monday-Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm Wednesday afternoon 4:00pm to 6:00pm

  13. STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Our staff attended a number of workshops to keep abreast of current library issues and to develop new skills. Continuing Education Trainings: • Social Software in Libraries • Books and Boys • Cleaning Up Our Act • Para los ninos/For the Children • Summer Reading Club 2009 • Graphic Novels • Encyclopedia Britannica For Elementary

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES • Story time for parents (both in English & Spanish): Para Los Ninos • Story time every Tuesday evening 4-5 • Library presented two different programs • Total number of children’s programs provided by the library 6 • There are 11 classes going to library prek-4 • Total visits per month = 44 • Total attendance at programs/presentations provided by the library 389

  16. COMMUNITY OUTREACH • Coverage of library events are published on our local community newspaper

  17. DONATIONS We were very fortunate to receive 150 brand new books from our patrons. A nameplate was attached to each book denoting the donor and the date of donation. A letter of appreciation was sent out to each donor.

  18. ACTIVITIES • Library Club: 4th and 5th grade student read to elderly in the community (20 students involved in project and total of 30 elderly). Students attend their homes with prior permission and supervision. • Book Character Parade • 1 Author Event: Joe Hayes • Book Fair: $2,7053.09 in total fair sales. Received 50% profit and each student received 2 free books • Podcast: 10 students created booktalks and podcast them on the library website. Booktalks are created monthly • Book Club Discussion: A total of ____ • 12 featured films…. Movie night every 3rd Wednesday of the month. • Summer Reading Program: Reading Across Texas • Summer Reading with Barnes & Noble. A total of 120 students read 8 books this summer and journal what they read. They took their completed Journal to Barnes & Noble and received a coupon to choose a free book from their selected titles.

  19. RECOMMENDATION • Additional funding for books • Reference materials and magazines to support interdisciplinary units in curriculum • Replace outdated material • Continue to work on meeting all of Texas State Standards
