  2. What is Common Core? • A nationally adopted document that informs teachers of what they need to teach at each grade level. • Common Core is for Math, Reading and Writing • Essential Standards cover Social Studies and Science • http://www.corestandards.org/

Math • Operations and Algebraic thinking Be able to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. • Number and Operations in Base Ten Use place value understanding to perform multi-digit problems. • Numbers and Operations Fractions Develop an understanding of fractions as numbers • Measurement and Data Measure time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects. Understand concepts of area and perimeter. • Geometry Reason with shapes and their attributes.

  4. Literacy • Reading Literature • Text complexity and the growth of comprehension • Reading: Informational Text • Nonfiction • Reading Foundational • Phonics, word recognition, and Fluency

Writing • Opinion Pieces Introduce the topic, Provide reasons, use linking words to connect ideas, and provide a concluding statement • Informative/Explanatory Pieces Introduce the topic, develop the topic with facts, use linking words to connect ideas • Narratives Establish a situation and introduce characters, Use dialogue, put events in chronological order, provide closure

  8. Daily 5 • Read to Self • Read to Someone • Work on Writing • Listen to Reading • Word Work

  9. Guided Reading • Small Group Instruction • Fluid groups, sometimes skill based, sometimes reading level based • Students leave each guided reading session with an assignment to complete before the next meeting.

  10. Word Study • Month by Month Phonics • Using Words You Know, Guess the Covered Word, Making Words • Words Their Way • Differentiated Word Groups based on preassessment. • Weekly mandatory activities and choice activities

  11. Grading • Common Assessment 2-3 times a Quarter and counts twice • Journal Grades Literacy, Writing, Science, Word Study 3-4 times a Quarter and counts once • Classroom Assessments 4-7 Throughout a Quarter • Homework 2 times a Quarter for Reading and Math
