Overview continued • Live Guests: CAM: • Kelleena Richards Ms. Richards provides assistance and training for mandated reporters statewide and has reviewed over 22,000 cases of child abuse and neglect as a Senior Attorney for OCFS. • Patrick Tooman Mr. Tooman is involved in the development of curricula and the delivery of training to improve child welfare practice and service delivery throughout New York State.

Segment 1-Early Childhood Trauma: Infants to Preschoolers This segment will focus on: • defining childhood trauma; • identifying causes of trauma in young children; • describing effects children experiencing trauma might exhibit; and • exploring child development in relation to trauma in infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

Activity Session-Community ResourcesLotto Break- Remember to Turn down your TV’s • Begin by having participants think about resources available in their community that could assist them or families in their program experiencing a traumatic event. • Have them write down at least one resource (generic or specific) on the activity sheet for each of the following areas: Weather or event related Medical or illness related Divorce or separation Death Bullying Abuse or maltreatment

Activity Session-Community Resources continuedLotto Break- Remember to Turn down your TV’s • Have the group share resources they wrote down. • Encourage all participants to write down additional ideas for each category during the group discussion. Remind participants they can use the back of their activity sheet or a note page in the back of their participant materials booklet if they need more space for writing down ideas. • If time permits, read the article on pages 2-4 of the participant materials booklet titled “Trauma in Young Children: A Huge Problem Hiding in Plain Sight and How You Can Help”.

Segment 2–Early Childhood Trauma: School-Age and Beyond This segment will focus on: • exploring child development in relation to trauma in school-agers; • identifying the different levels of stress; • providing advice to share with families whose children might be experiencing a traumatic event; • discussing resilience and recovery from trauma; and • defining compassion fatigue or secondary traumatic stress.

Discussion Session-Taking Care of Yourself • Begin by having participants think about ways they can take better care of themselves to reduce the amount of stress they experience. • Have participants get together with a partner, or have a whole group discussion, where providers share their stress reducing ideas.

Segment 3-CAM: Definitions and Indicators This segment will focus on: • defining the elements of child maltreatment and neglect; • defining the term child abuse; and • identifying physical and behavioral indicators of child abuse or maltreatment.

Activity Session-Making the Call • Begin by having participants think about possible barriers or obstacles they might encounter or think about when debating making a call to the Statewide Central Register. • Have participants write down at least 3 barriers on their activity sheet.

Activity Session-Making the Call continued • Then have participants think about suggestions for ways they could overcome the barriers they listed. • They should write these ideas down in the space provided on the activity sheet. • If time permits, participants should share some of their ideas about barriers and ways to overcome them with the group.

Segment 4–CAM: Mandated Reporters and Making the Call This segment will focus on: • discussing the importance of conducting a Daily Health Check; • defining mandated reporters and their responsibilities; • describing the process of making a call to the Statewide Central Register; and • identifying possible barriers to making a call to the SCR and discussing why those barriers should never stop you from making a call.

Test • Test is “open book” so it should be given out at the beginning of the training and can be filled out as the training takes place. • Test will be read aloud twice at the end of the training. • Attestation statement must be signed in order to receive credit for the training.
