  7. 7 CHENNAI CITY LIMTS

  8. Steady increase in the growth of Bus transport • 8

  10. Growth of Vehicle Population • 10

  11. Road vehicles, especially two wheelers have substantially increased. Whereas the infrastructure facilities of the city not proportionately increased. Due to increase in vehicle population, the average journey time has increased Growth of Vehicle Population • 11

  12. Present Scenario of Transport Infrastructure 26% 3% 71% • Chennai is the fourth- largest city in India with a population of about 8 million • 11 million trips in a day, of which about 6 million vehicular trip • Many areas in city and suburbs are not served by rail based system • Suburban and MRTS traffic have increased, but NOT in tune with the traffic demand • Rail network expansion failed to keep pace with demand resulting in severe congestion on road network & Environmental pollution • 12

  13. The options are………… 1. ROAD BASED SYSTEM 2. RAIL BASED MASS TRANSIT SYSTEM • 13

  14. ROAD BASED SYSTEM Widening of Roads Involves large scale land and building acquisition in the heart of the City- not feasible Elevated Bus bay system Dedicated bus bays/expressways not feasible because: -numerous existing flyovers ; -city landscape intervened with commercial/residential buildings and walkways • 14

  15. RAIL BASED MASS TRANSIT SYSTEM Mono Rail: Suitable as a feeder service Limited capacity <10000 phpdt Light Rail Transit (LRT): Suitable for low to medium capacity traffic between 10000 and 25000 phpdt The arterial roads of Chennai is already having traffic in the order of 30000phpdt and growing steadily • 15

  16. RAIL BASED MASS TRANSIT SYSTEM Medium Capacity Metro System Suitable for traffic demand of 30000-40000 phpdt Most economically suited system for the saturated corridors of the Chennai City • 16

  17. Advantages of Metro System Requires 1/5th energy per passenger km compared to road based system More reliable, Comfortable and Safer Fully air conditioned Carries same amount of traffic as 7 lanes of bus traffic or 22 lanes of private cars Reduces journey time by 50 to75% Washermanpet to Airport -by road will take 90 to 100 minutes -Metro Rail will take 45 minutes • 17

  18. Advantages of Metro System Tangible & non Tangible Savings Socio Economic Benefits Vehicle operating costs (VOC) saved Passenger time saved Less air and noise pollution Reduction in number of road accidents Reduction in Road infrastructure and consequent maintenance Chennai city will be placed in global Metro map • 18

  19. CHENNAI METRO SELECTION OF CORRIDOR Detailed Feasibility Study was carried out, and 7 (Seven) corridors prioritised Detailed traffic survey was done for the 3 (Three) main corridors • 19
