  3. Theatre in the U.K. • During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I • Shakespeare’s plays performed between 1589-1613 • Thames river separating London and Southwark • Theatre outlawed in London by the Church of England • London theatres closed in 1596

  4. The Globe Theatre • Large round wooden structure • Open in the middle • No artificial lighting • “Flies” • Trap doors • “Scene Painting”

  7. Audience • Poor people on the ground (Groundlings) • Vendors sold snacks and drinks • Often became wrestles and disruptive • Shakespeare would use violence, comical buffoonery, or dirty jokes to keep people engaged

  8. Women and Theatre • No women on stage • Female roles played by adolescent male • Wig, dress, make up • Theatre considered too crude for women • If women did attend, would wear a mask
