  2. Social and Cultural Changes • *Henry VIII wanted to annul his marriage to Catharine of Aragon… a big no no in the Catholic church. He broke away from the Catholic church and the Monarch was declared the head of the church in England. • *There were other causes for this break such as a rejection of the corruption in the Catholic Church.

  3. Elizabeth I • *Daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. • *Reigned from 1558-1603 • *Her reign is considered a time of great discovery and prosperity as well as achievement in the arts. • *Her personal love for drama is a key factor in its success and development during this time.

  4. Actors • *Until 1570 professional players did not enjoy favor in England and such people could be arrested as vagrants. • *The law changed and groups received royal patronage. • *Lord Chamberlain’s Men (Shakespeare Group) eventually became the King’s Men when James I took over patronage in 1603

  5. Theaters • *Richard Burbage built the first building dedicated to theatrical performances in 1576. It was called The Theatre. • *Actors and Playwrights owned a stake in their companies and received part of the admission cost. • *Theatres were open aired. Which means they were closed in the winter. • *Other Theatres included The Swan, The Rose, The Fortune and The Globe

Theaters con’t • *The shape of the early theatres was often octagonal or circular. • *The stage was raised about five feet from the ground. • *There were levels of seating in several galleries. • *Doors or curtained openings at the back of the stage served for entrances and exits. • *There was also a special room at the back of the stage used for costume changes.
