  1. ATLAS, ATLAB and EDUSAFE Partnering with external organizations Markus Nordberg Marzio Nessi ATLAS Collaboration at CERN, Geneva Switzerland

  2. What is ATLAS?

  3. ATLAS is a Physics Experiment www.atlas.ch

  4. ATLAS is a Global R&D Network

  5. How does ATLAS (CERN) operate? • ATLAS and CERN operate in fundamental physics research • It designs, constructs and operates scientific apparatus’ of large industrial scale • “technology push”, order-of-magnitude leaps in desired performance • It organizes itself around scientific collaborations which interact in an open manner • No legal framework • Instead, a declaration of “best effort basis” by the participating institutes • No central (ATLAS) hiring structures; all personnel allocated through the 173 participating institutions

  6. What is ATLAB? • ATLAB (ATLAS Technology Lab) is a centralized platform or interface to facilitate technology exchange with external (industrial) partners outside the Collaboration, across different ATLAS Upgrades and R&D projects, by obtaining complementary funding, e.g. from the EU • ATLAB offers external partners an integrated test environment for new technology products and ideas • ATLAB has methods to scan the market potential for new concepts and ideas • ATLAB is a technology-market meeting point (show-case) • There is no fee to join ATLAB • As explained, EDUSAFE has been set up within this framework

  7. Current status of ATLAB • As ATLAS (or ATLAB) is not a legal entity, CERN is helping in terms of governance and financial structures, handling also the funding • Example: EDUSAFE Consortium Agreement discussions • Plans are underway to set aside adequate lab space and meeting areas for ATLAB technology exchange activities and for its partners to meet & mingle • Our expectation is that we will have ATLAB (physically) up and running by mid-2013

  8. ATLAB Partnership Agreement • EDUSAFE partners are now invited to sign a bilateral Partnership Agreement (PA) with ATLAB in order, to • Identify areas of common interest (other ATLAB Technology Programs, potential EU-programs etc.) • Agree on the nature of collaboration and level of mutual expectations (possibly beyond Consortium Agreements) • Agree on the sharing of technology and related information (possibly beyond Consortium Agreements) • Agree on the basic principles of commonly funded projects • Ensure cross-fertilization and non-competitive positioning wrt to other ATLAB partners in other projects • The initial duration is one year or end date of launched project(s)

  9. ATLAB PA (2) • Based on the operation principles of both ATLAS Collaboration and CERN, the guiding principles of the ATLAB PA are as follows • The nature of the scientific and technological exchange is open • ATLAB will not protect itself any commercial use of possible new ideas or products resulting from the intellectual contributions made by ATLAS • ATLAB will only use the (integrated) results of the exchange for the R&D/upgrade purposes of ATLAS • ATLAB will not sign any non-disclosure agreements • External partners are free to make best use of the results • Possible concerns of confidentiality need to be identified and addressed on a case-by-case basis • ATLAB facilities are access-free, open to its partners and VIP guests visiting CERN
