  1. How many days left until we reach our big goal? Are y0u, personally, on track to meet our goal? Be honest Write two/three sentences about what you need to do better.

  2. DO NOW According to the Law of Conservation of mass, if I start a reaction with 6 atoms of Helium, I should have ___ atoms of Helium at the end. I start a reaction with 3 atoms of Carbon and end with 3 atoms of Carbon. Has this reaction obeyed the LCM? Draw the t-charts for the equation: PCl5 3 P + Cl2

  3. DO NOW REVIEW

  4. NOTES Title: LCM and Chemical Equations Why is today important? It sets you up to be able to take AP Chem by getting a good foundation of the REALLY hard stuff in Chemistry. Take out a piece of paper in the next 20 seconds We write notes silently so we can focus on our work We are working to be honor roll students and the best freshman at Craigmont who are going to the best colleges in the country! 

  5. These chemical equations can be split into 2 different groups. Using your knowledge of equation coefficients, figure out how to group them. You should work independently and diligently. The first 2 people to discover the 2 groups correctly will win a prize. You have eight minutes. Hint: start making charts for each side of the equation 1CH4 + 2 O21 CO2 + 2 H2O C3H8+ 2 O2 CO2 + H2O 2C8H18 + 25 O216 CO2 + 18 H2O 1FeCl3 + 3NaOH5FeOH + 3NaCl 4P + 5 O22 P2O5 Na + H2O 2NaOH+ 1H2

  6. Key Points! • Key Point #1: The law of conservation of mass states that in a chemical reaction, mass will be conserved (meaning it will be the same before and after a chemical reaction) • Key Point #2: When we apply the law of conservation of mass to a chemical equation, this means that the reactants and products must have the same number of each element

  7. Key Point #3: A skeleton equation is one that tells us the compounds/elements that are part of a reaction, but it may not obey the lawwwww.

  8. Balanced Equations • Key Point #4: A balanced equation has the same number of each element on both the reactants side and the products side.

  9. Independent Practice! – 10 minutes On a separate piece of paper, make a T-chart for the following chemical equations. Then, based on your T-chart, determine if the equations satisfy the law of conservation of mass or not. If you have a question, raise your hand. N2 + O22 NO Balanced or no? CH4 + O2 CO2 + H2O Balanced or not? C3H8 + 5 O2 3 CO2 + 4 H2O Balanced or not? 2 Na + 2 H2O  2 NaOH + H2 Balanced or not? Done early? Grab an early finishers article!

  10. Exit Ticket – 3 minutes 1. In order to obey the law of conservation of mass, the reactants and products side must have __________________ number of atoms. 2. H2CO3 → H2O + 2 CO2 Make a T-chart to determine if this equation is balanced. According to your T-chart, is it balanced?
