South America. The World’s fourth largest continent with a population of 373 million. Because of the geographical features that discourage human settlement many are forced to live along the Populated Rim – the continents edges.

The World’s fourth largest continent with a population of 373 million. • Because of the geographical features that discourage human settlement many are forced to live along the Populated Rim – the continents edges. • The coastal region provides favorable climates, fertile land, and easy access to transportation systems. • Population Density is low compared the actual population because of land area!! • Example: Brazil has a large population of 184 million; however Brazil also has a very large land area resulting in a population density of only 56 people per square mile.   3. Many people are emigrating or moving out of South America • Reasons for Emigration • Better Wages • Better Living Conditions • Escape Violence of War • Educational Opportunities • This is known asBrain Drain: The loss of educated people to other countries. Population

  4. Incan Empire: • Ruled through a central government headed by an Emperor. • Created a Hierarchical society. • Very skilled engineers • Built temples and fortresses • Laid out a network of roads • Built irrigation systems History and Government

European Conquest: • By 1535 the Incan empire had been weakened by the Spanish Conquistador Francisco Pizzaro. • Many other European groups settled in South America • Spain = Colombia, Argentina, and Chile • Great Britain, France, and the Netherlands = Northern South America • Portuguese = Brazil History and Government Cont.

By the mid – 1800s most countries in South America had claimed their independence from European colonization. • Suriname was the last the gain their independence in 1975 from the Netherlands. • Today, most South American countries claim to have some form of Democracy • However, the power remains in the hands of few: Oligarchy • Most Oligarchies are run by military or “caudillos”

Language: • Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and French are the main languages spoke throughout South America. • However, most South Americans are bilingual. • Religion: • Main religion is Roman Catholic • Protestant, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Shinto, Islam, Judaism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and a combination of indigenous and Roman Catholicism are also practice throughout South America. Family Life: • Most households consist of the Nuclear Family – father, mother, and dependant children. • The compadresor godparents are also an invaluable part of the family. • Most free time revolves around family, religious festivals, and patriotic events…. • Carnival – A Brazilian celebration • Located in Rio De Janeiro • Celebrated the week before lent.   9. Education and Healthcare: • Education varies based on Standard of living. • Healthcare is vary poor in many countries due to: • Poverty • Lack of sanitation • Malnutrition • This is especially true to Favelas - Slums

  10. Arts: • Cuzco and Manchu Picchu are famous for their Ancient stone work and engineering • Traditional music and dance are a mix of Native American, African, and European influence • Examples: Brazilian Samba, Argentine Tango. Arts
