1. Tips for planning Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Mountain gorillas can only be found in two places in the entire world. These are in the Virunga volcanic mountains of Central Africa and the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. We believe the best place to go gorilla trekking is in Bwindi. It’s a beautiful place recognised as one of the most biologically diverse forests in Africa. There are four habituated troops of mountain gorillas living here, namely the Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura and Nkuringo. These four troops range in size from 10 to 20 individuals, each with one or two silverbacks. What is the habitat of mountain gorillas? Spoiler alert: a clue is in the name! Mountain gorillas, a subspecies of the eastern gorilla, live in forests high in the mountains. These forests sit at elevations of 2,500 to 4,000 m (8,000 to 13,000 ft). These trackers are in contact with your guide via radio and GPS, which means you’ll know you’re heading in the right direction to locate gorillas! How long does it take to find the mountain gorillas? When you meet the national park rangers in the morning for your briefing, they have a rough idea where the various gorilla troops are. Visitors have a choice of a short, medium or long trek. If you opt for a short trek, you can expect to find your troop in around half an hour, while if you opt for the long trek, it can take two to three hours. We recommend the long trek if you’re in a decent physical shape; hiking through the dense rainforest is a truly memorable experience in and of itself, and it also builds your anticipation for when you finally meet the gorillas! Is it safe to be so close to mountain gorillas? Mountain gorillas in the wild are not considered dangerous, as long as they’re comfortable and relaxed.
