  1. Absorption D. Crowley, 2007

  2. Absorption • To know what happens to food molecules once they have been absorbed into the blood

  3. Anagrams • Can you work out the anagrams? • Zeenym • Gdestioni • Fdoo • Taf • Cesbhydraoat • Tinproe • Llivi • Eintintes Enzyme Digestion Food Fat Carbohydrate Protein Villi Intestine

  4. Absorption • Remember, the inside wall of the small intestine is thin, with a really big surface area • This allows absorption to happen quickly and efficiently (so we absorb as much food as possible) • To get a big surface area, the inside wall of the small intestine is lined with tiny villi (one of them is called a villus) • These stick out and give a big surface area. They also contain blood capillaries to carry away the absorbed food molecules.

  5. Egestion • Excess water is absorbed back into the body in the large intestine • Undigested food is stored in the rectum, the lower part of the large intestine, until we are ready to go to the toilet • It then comes out of the rectum through the anus as faeces • This process is called egestion

  6. Summary • Food is initially chewed, and some enzymes start breaking it down - it is swallowed down the oesophagus • It enters the stomach (more enzymes) and is churned and broken down (pH) • Food molecules (nutrients) are absorbed in the small intestine, where they pass into the blood • Water is absorbed in the large intestine • Food that is not digested is stored in the rectum, then egested through the anus

  7. Digestion

  8. Task • Your task it to create either a written description (where you pretend to be a piece of food) about your journey through the digestive system and into the cells • If you are a good artist, you could do a cartoon strip with captions • This work will be levelled, so add as much scientific detail as you can
