  2. Stage 7 Culture • 1. Where did the Romans bury their dead? • The practice of cremation was popular in Roman times. The ashes would then be placed in a cremation urn. The urns would be placed in tombs located just outside of town by the side of the road. • 2. Why did they do it that way? • The tombs could be seen & admired there. • 3. Where are the tombs at Pompeii? • On the roads that go north from the Herculaneum Gate & south from the Nuceria Gate. • 4. What did the tombs represent? • Some were grand & impressive & looked like small houses; others were plain & simple.

They were often surrounded by gardens or decorated with garlands of flowers • The dead would be supplied with the things they used in life…toys for children, a mirror for a woman, etc. • Tombs were looked after so that the ghosts of the dead would not come back and haunt the living. • 6. What did the Romans think that the ghosts would do if they were not buried properly? • They could be dangerous.

What two conditions did the ghosts experience and therefore what two things would they need? • The dead were lonely and did not lead a happy existence. • Therefore, in order to help them forget their unhappiness, their tombs were decorated and they were given two festivals per year. • Ghosts were thought to be hungry and had to be fed. Their favorite drink was blood (yuk) but wine was often substituted. • At one of the festivals, the families would remember the parents and relatives who had died. • At the other, they performed rites to exorcise any ghosts from their houses who might be lonely or hungry (creepy).
