  2. “Personal Hygiene refers to practices performed for one’s health and wellbeing through cleanliness to reduce personal illness, provide healing from illness, maintain optimal health and wellbeing, enhance social acceptation and prevent the spread of illness to others.” (World Health Organization 2011, ¶1 ) Personal Hygiene is an important part of one’s health as it affects the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing of a person. John 15: 3 (NIV) “You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you” • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV) “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?   You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore honour God with your body,”. “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”

Germs are potential infectious bacteria, viruses etc. constantly shed via mucus, vomit, skin scales, they carry the potential for infectious bacteria and viruses. • The main highways for spread of germs are hands, food and water, contact, surfaces, cleaning clothes and utensils, clothing and towels. • Respiratory germs are also spread via the air. (Tork 2011, ¶ 2 - 4) GERM ALERT Why we need to look after ourselves?

People touch 300 different surfaces every 30 minutes. • As many as 14 people in a row can be contaminated from touching a dirty door handle and you transfer 71% of the cold virus on your hands with a simple handshake. • It is estimated that 80% of common diseases are spread by hands. • Things from rhinovirus (the common cold) to influenza to salmonella to E. coli, along with many other dangerous bacteria and viruses. • (Tork 2011, ¶ 5) The human hand has over 1500 germs per square centimeter

  7. How do we encourage good personal hygiene?

  8. The most likely way in which germs can be spread, so simply washing hands is the most effective method of preventing transmission of infections. (Hand Hygiene Australia 2011, ¶ 1) 1. HAND WASHING

Shower and bathe daily • Brush and floss teeth twice a day • Wash your feet daily • Wash your hair regularly • Overall grooming of body – clean cut nails, shaving. • Hold a tissue over mouth when coughing or sneezing, not bare hands. • Suppress bad habits such as nose-picking, touching face, biting nails • Wear clean clothes • Use clean linen and towels • Keeping surrounding environment clean • Properly cleanse and treat wounds. • Eat healthy and drink plenty of water • Get good sleep • Visit doctor and dentist regularly (Chai Media n.d.) (Child and Youth Health 2011) Personal Hygiene Practices for Everyone!

Regular hand washing throughout the day • Box of tissues readily available to students • Hand sanitiser if necessary • First Aid Kit • Disinfectant cleaner to wipe commonly used surfaces • General cleanliness and tidiness of the classroom • Good air ventilation • Good classroom temperature • Suitable furniture layout (Booker 2009, ¶ 30 – 39) In the Classroom

  11. Teachers must be: • aware - ‘know your students’ • Sensitive and considerate – culturally • must not be too extreme • Involve students – make it fun! • Involve parents – good communication Tips for Teachers

Students create a poster outlining their own set of rules for personal hygiene. or Students investigate personal hygiene according to needs of different types of people e.g. Babies, pregnant women, elderly people, ill people.
