Early Years The Accident • Began to stab the leather like his father did • The awl glanced off the leather and punctured his eye • Eventually the infection spread to the other eye • Louis was completely blind
Early YearsSeven Years Old • Village Priest taught him school lessons-blind people were not accepted in school • Priest received permission for Louis to attend the village school • Louis couldn’t read, but he concentrated so well he could remember the lesson
School & Education Royal Institute for the Blind • Louis allowed to attend the only school for the blind • Blind read with embossed books with raised alphabet letters • Military captain taught the students a secret military code with raised dots on cardboard
