Louis Braille • Born January 4,1809 in Coupervay, France • Went blind at the age of 3,1812 • Enrolled in The Royal Institute for Blind Youth at age 10, 1819 • Devised braille on 1821 • First braille book published 1826 • Went to work at the Royal Inst. as a teacher • Died Jan. 6 1852 of tuberculosis

  4. Braille • Consists of 6 cells, or dots • Each letter fits under the finger tip • Each cell stands for one letter, symbol or number • Originally created with an awl, which had caused Louis to go blind • Invented in 1821 • Fully recognized by the public in 1854
